Summer. Montana, 1985. When seven-year-old Ryan Novak suddenly disappears from his home in a small rural town, Detective Newton picks up the case. Convinced that the boy’s grandfather - school janitor and former woodsman Bill O’Donnell - knows what happened to the boy, Newton’s growing obsession with his only suspect begins to take its toll.

Winter. Montana, 2010. Twenty-five years later and, in the final days of Newton’s tarnished career, Bill O’Donnell is found murdered. Newton’s successor, a city-toughened young Texan detective named Ward, is the lead investigator. As Newton readies himself for retirement, Ward draws him back into the mystery he couldn’t solve. Can they find the old man’s killer and finally uncover the truth about what really happened to Ryan?

The silence is about to be shattered.

An End to a Silence is book 1 in a 3 part US crime novel series. Book 2, If I Scream, was published in December 2017.

An End to a Silence The Ward Trilogy Book 1 edition by WH Clark Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The book under consideration here is an example of a type of novel I like very much. It’s a “small” mystery, localized and character-driven. No international conspiracies; no shadowy government agents. An End to a Silence is the sort of mystery that’s produced more in England than in America nowadays, and as it happens the author is English, though the story is set in America, in a small town in Montana, and seems right at home.

Detective Newton is a burnt-out case, a cop whose career stalled long ago. Now he’s just marking time until retirement. But he’s called to a local nursing home, where an old man’s death has been identified as murder. When Newton sees the victim, he’s suddenly galvanized. This man, Bill O’Donnell, is a suspect in 25 year old case, the disappearance of O’Donnell’s own grandson. Newton is certain that O’Donnell killed the boy and hid the body, despite the fact that he was a kindly man, loved in the community and active in his church.

A new policeman has come to help. His name is Ward (he never explains whether it’s his first or last name), and he’s straight out of a Hollywood western. He’s from Texas, he’s tall and lean and taciturn, he wears a cowboy hat, and he has secrets. Along with investigating the murder, he gets involved in protecting a local woman from her abusive, junkie ex-husband.

The story is all about secrets, and what people do to protect themselves and those they love. There’s a surprising reversal at the end, giving us a resolution that’s not entirely satisfying, but true to life as we know it.

I enjoyed An End to a Silence very much, and regret that this is the author’s first novel. I fear I’ll forget his name before there’s another. Sex, language, and violence are relatively mild, and on top of that the Christians in the book are treated respectfully.

An End to a Silence The Ward Trilogy Book 1 edition by WH Clark Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This story has many plotlines. The storyline is well thought out and kept me interested. Detective Ward is the central character but there are many more. Mr. Clark keeps the story going and injects secondary stories as well. Great read!
Interesting crime book having a hard edge and a protagonist with some bluster that I enjoyed. Pairing a young Texas lawman together with a compulsive detective in his twilight years added just enough friction to keep things rolling. Had all the elements I require in a mystery including enough twists to keep me guessing till the close so am now hoping book 2 of the trilogy is released soon as I do find Ward a fun character to follow. Good book!
Excellent mystery with a sudden twist at the end. Just like an Agatha Kristi where you'd never guess the killer. The characters are very human and easily to empathize with. Well written first novel, Mr. Clark!
For a first book in a series, there's little background to understand the main character. The grammar throughout the book was awful. "Ain't" was a favorite word. Someone who supposedly grew up with a father who was a teacher would know better. Waste of time.
There are the makings of a very good story here. There's certainly a lot of suspense and one does get caught up in wanting to find out who did the deed. However, it was hard to follow the line of thought. The story doesn't run smoothly. The author portrays his characters as rather low class and uninspiring. The way the characters spoke was off. I got the feeling that the author didn't know the country or the people very well and referring to a kid in 1986 having a cell phone was a bit strange! I only hope there are no police departments like the one portrayed in this book. I would hope our police had enough education to speak correctly and enough training to know how to remain safe and uphold the law. Some of the detective's actions were just stupid. The ending left too much unfinished. If the author plans a sequel, fine. At least give the readers some satisfaction that the mystery is wrapped up. I really was turned off by the ending. I gave this 3 stars only because I liked the dog! I suggest the author visit our country and get to know the people before he writes about them.
I greatly enjoyed this novel. I was pleasantly surprised to discover Mr. Clark is not a resident of Montana. He wrote as if he had lived in a small Montana town all his life. I was further surprised to discover he lives in England. Great job, Mr. Clark, on your first novel!.
I didn't rate this novel a "5" because because of the ambiguity of the ending. I hope we readers find out what Detective Newton decided to do about Ryan's killer.
**********SPOILER ALERT!!******DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVE NOT READ "AN END TO A SILENCE" """"""
In the last few paragraphs before the novel's conclusion, it appeared that justice would be served for poor, long-dead Ryan. BUT when Detective Newton leaves his daughter's house, and walks to his car, his progress is likened to Bill O'Donnell carrying the body of his grandson into the woods. This comparison leads me to believe the truth will be silenced further, just as it had been for the past 25 years. Newton knew Ryan deserved justice, but he also knew that to speak out the truth would be the ruin of his daughter's life.
I asked myself, "What would I do?". I don't know.
Review AN END TO A SILENCE by W. H. Clark

Two aspects of this novel are mind-bending. I had read the author's bio note while waiting for the book to download, and saw this is his debut novel. Well, this is a Best of 2015! All through the book, I kept thinking, how can a piece this polished be debut?
Second, here is a native of Yorkshire, writing of Montana as if he'd lived there year 'round for a century!

25 years ago in a small insulated Montana town, one evening a 7-year-old boy disappeared. Failure to locate any trace ruined the detective on the case. Now, 25 years later, the child's grandfather, sole remaining relative, dies in a nursing home--murdered by morphine. The aging, almost retired, detective, is ordered by his Lieutenant not to reopen the cold case. But he can't let it rest; and now there's a new detective in town, an ex-Texas Ranger who drives an Alfa Romeo and carries his own deep secrets.
